KISSAMOS
Small town, situated on the ruins of the very important ancient city of “Kissamos”, which flourished during the Roman and early Christian era. Remains of a Roman aqueduct as well as brilliant examples of mosaics are preserved at the “Krya Vrysi” location, while the city’s citadel is preserved in the “Seli” site. The mosaic floors of two houses that date back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D. exhibit the era’s high aesthetics and are excellent technical examples of the Kissamos mosaic workshop. The archeological museum is housed in a hall of the former Venetian-Turkish Administration. Apart from the archaeological interest presented by this quiet provincial town, it has also some wonderful sandy beaches (“Mavros Molos”). In the seaside tavernas and restaurants one can find fresh fish and genuine Cretan cuisine. For those interested in traditional art, the wood carvers of the area are renowned for their meticulous work. Cultural events take place in the first fortnight of August.
